VICTORIA – April 2, 2008 – The province is investing more than $230,000 in educational supports for adults and pre-schoolers. Claude Richmond, Minister of Employment and Income Assistance, along with Ron Cantelon, MLA for Nanaimo-Parksville, display the contents of the Adult Basic Education Back-to-School Starter Kit. The kits will be given to income assistance clients who have made the decision to upgrade their education. Minister Richmond also announced that 700 families with pre-schoolers will be given three monthly bus passes to encourage them to take their children to the StrongStart BC centre in their community. VICTORIA - November 28, 2007 - Claude Richmond, Minister of Employment and Income Assistance presents Kathy Newman, Executive Director, BC Wheelchair Sports Association with the keys to a brand new van, specially modified to transport wheelchair athletes and their equipment to events throughout British Columbia and Western North America. The van was purchased as part of a $225,000 grant the Ministry provided to the BC Wheelchair Sport Association to increase access to sporting opportunities for wheelchair athletes.

Sports specific wheelchairs, including ones for wheelchair rugby, can cost upwards of $3,000 each. 'WELCOME TO YOUR HOME' STARTER KIT PROGRAM LAUNCHED

KAMLOOPS - August 30, 2007 - Minister Claude Richmond was at the John Howard Society's Victory Inn to launch the 'Welcome to Your Home' starter kit program and announce the BC Government has provided the BC Non-Profit Housing Association with a one-time, $1 million grant for the program. Consisting of over 100 essential household items, the 'Welcome to Your Home' starter kits will benefit eligible low-income British Columbians who are moving into provincially subsidized housing developments. Operating for more than 50 years, the Medical Equipment Loan Service offers - at no charge - short-term loans of wheelchairs, walkers, crutches and bathroom aids to help British Columbians recovering for temporary injuries due to injuries, illnesses or surgeries. These services are provided from 100 locations across the province, staffed by over 850 volunteers.

On September 26, Employment and Income Assistance Minister Claude Richmond spoke at an open house held by the BC Association for Individualized Technology and Supports for People with Disabilities (BCITS). BCITS is a newly created community based centre of excellence which houses two important programs - the Provincial Respiratory Outreach Program (PROP) and Technology for Independent Living (TIL). These programs provide technical supports to meet the functional needs of people with disabilities so they can engage in employment, volunteer work, recreation or cultural activities.

MINISTRY SUPPORTS DENTAL CARE FOR VICTORIA'S MOST VULNERABLE

Minister Claude Richmond presented the cheque to Cool Aid Society executive director Kathy Stinson to purchase new equipment for the clinic.

VICTORIA - The city's most vulnerable residents have more to smile about thanks to a one-time grant of $49,000 to the Victoria Cool Aid Society's Dental Clinic.

Minister Claude Richmond presented the cheque to Cool Aid Society executive director Kathy Stinson to purchase new equipment for the clinic.

The clinic provides relief of pain and follow-up dental services to hundreds of low-income people every year.

The grant was one of seven one-time contributions to emergency dental clinics throughout the province, totalling $219,700.

Employment and Income Assistance Minister Claude Richmond speaks with Don Danbrook of the Neil Squire Society about assistive technologies in the workplace for persons with disabilities. The foundation's assistive technologies lab - supported by the government's $20 million Disability Supports for Employment Fund which is administered by the Vancouver Foundation - includes such equipment as the Morse code puffer which permits word processing with breath alone. Looking on are Yasmin Juma, the foundation's Employment Programs for Persons with Disabilities executive administrator and Tejindar Parhar from the Ministry.

PROVINCE SUPPORTS FRIENDSHIP CENTRE DENTAL CLINIC

A new Prince George pain control dental clinic will become a reality in the new year thanks to a one-time $50,000 grant from the Ministry of Employment and Income Assistance.

On hand at the Prince George Native Friendship Centre to announce the funding on November 29 were: Prince George North MLA Pat Bell (far right) and Prince George-Mount Robson MLA Shirley Bond, second from left.
